A recent geological survey report states that Indiana has the highest number of different Minerals in their Geodes, a higher number than Iowa or Ohio, ....and Many more than Kentucky. They are also much less expensive than Mexican Geodes, or South American Geodes.
There are many different views about how geodes are formed, but most geologists agree that they begin as bubbles or voids, sometimes in limestone sediments, sometimes in a lava flow. (For this instance we will deal with the Limestone variety) Occasionally they form around the body of a sea creature on the ocean floor or a plant or animal that fossilizes. Over time, the bubble is cast in a hard shell of silica and water containing dissolved materials which are trapped inside. The moisture seaping through results in composing a variety of minerals, usually quartz or calcite, but also aragonite, magnetite, barite and chalcopyrite, chalcedony, Smoky quartz, Rose quartz, yellow citrine, amethyst, agate and many others. Millions of years later, weathering lifts the extremely hard sphere away from the surrounding rock. (In this instance in Indiana, it is Limestone) The exterior of the sphere appears dull and pitted, which is no doubt why the Greeks called them âgeoidesâ, meaning earth like. Here in Indiana they look somewhat like brains. While on the inside, they can look heavenly with Pure bright sparkling crystals, and quartz, sparkling like diamonds. The composition forms a lining of inward projecting crystals and since different minerals harden at varying temperatures, the material forms layers (called Fortifications). Sometimes a cavity may be completely filled by layers. Purists refer to these geodes as nodules. Crack open a nodule and instead of a hollow crystalline core, you might find halos of brilliantly hued agate, produced where chalcedony-laden water precipitated within the shell. Geodes can also be filled with surrounding silt and sediments, forming mud balls.
If a crystal breaks off inside the geode, you can hear rattling (the ONLY guarantee of a hollow geode!), these are often called ârattlers, or rattle stonesâ. Occasionally, water gets trapped in the geodes, forming what is called an âenhydroâ, (Greek for water inside). It is also true that in a very small area of Illinois, and 1 small area of Indiana, they can be filled with crude oil!
A "Geode" by definition is hollow, while a "Nodule" looks identical but is not hollow or it does not have a cavity! It is impossible to know whether these Geodes / Nodules are hollow without cracking them open. Needless to say they are very unique looking. This is a very nice mix of color, size, and texture, one of the better selections offered on Webstore! Some people call them "Thunder Eggs" and another name around here that is socially unacceptable to mention here on Webstore.
THIS IS A LIMITED DEAL with a special price. THESE GEODES WILL BE NICE ROUND GEODES, NOT PANCAKE SHAPED, NONE WILL BE BUSTED OR HAVE HOLES IN THEM WHEN THEY ARE BOXED UP, AND I WILL FILL ANY VOIDS WITH EXTRA GEODES!! AT LEAST 6 to 32 GEODES (plus any extra I can fit in before sealing)

Care must be taken if you try to crack a geode open, pieces fly off like shrapnel. They also have the ability to explode if you try and heat them up! (Do not ask me why someone would try to heat one up, but there are people that have!.......and they have been hurt!)
KIDS LOVE THESE GEODES! Look up kids cracking open geodes on youtube.com These make awesome gifts!
