On her deathbed, Jack Singer (Nicholas Cage) promises his mother he will never marry, yet despite this, he wants a closer, committed relationship with his girlfriend, Betsy (Sarah Jessica Parker). They finally agree to elope and get married in Las Vegas, but a wealthy gambler named Tommy Korman -- who becomes enamored of Betsy because she reminds him of his former wife -- arranges for Jack to lose a big amount of money in a rigged poker game. Korman offers to clear the debt in exchange for a single weekend with Betsy in Hawaii. Jealous, Singer pursues them, however, Korman has put numerous obstacles in Singer's way to ensure himself adequate time to properly woo Betsy.
