Halloween, our weirdest celebration, is a hugely popular national holiday laced with its own uniquely recognizable symbols, rituals and tales. It’s like taking a holiday from the social constraints of reality, behavior and beliefs, and engage in the fantasy element of the absurd and occult. On Halloween, confronting the unknown with special symbols and rituals are part of the fun, when scary things are suddenly openly embraced on front porches and displayed in and around our homes. People dress like children and children like adults, engage in mockery and pranks ordinarily not allowed less powerful people can break the rules and flaunt otherwise unacceptable dress or behavior or even reverse the usual roles of parent-child, boss-worker, male-female everyday people don masks of the famous and become celebrities for a few hours. We revel in the thought of the dead walking the Earth, getting scared out of our wits, ghosts and vampires can be understood, and making fun of those we usually respect is ok. It empowers children to walk through the dark, visit a spooky house, visit a graveyard or a not-too-friendly or eccentric neighbor, and maybe break a taboo. The next day, however, we still lock our doors. But it’s still about sociability, when pranks and jokes are not supposed to cause long-lasting damage and everyone is still expected to say please and thank you.
