Offered for sale in absolute superb condition a vintage 1908 Brewster Governess Cart (also called a tub trap) common in Europe the U.S & the British Isles during the late 19th & early 20th centuries.
The purpose of the cart, generally driven in a breast-strap style harness,light enough to be drawn by a well-tempered pony or cob who would be gentle enough, according to the customs of the time, to be handled by a Lady. This gave rise to the cart's name, used by the Governess to take her charges around the estate or into the village, light enoughr for a Lady to handle,yet safe to transport the Master’s children where they could be easly observed.
Their distinguishing feature is a small tub body, with two opposed inward-facing seats. They could seat four, although there was little room for four large adults. The driver sat sideways on one of these seats. The centre rear of the body was lowered, with a small hinged door, with a step beneath. The wheels are of moderate size, fitted with mud guards, The axle is straight, carried on leaf springs for added comfort, plus giving a low, stable, centre of gravity.
The cart is also relatively safe, being difficult to either fall from, overturn, or to injure oneself with either the horse or wheels.
To witness a well groomed horse hitched to this mode of transport from a bygone era is a truly memorable experience.
