After a more rock-oriented tenure at Warner Brothers in the late '70s and early '80s, Rodney Crowell moved to Columbia, where his wife Rosanne Cash already had a record deal. Here he pursued a direction closer to that which he'd explored while serving as a pivotal member of Emmylou Harris' Hot Band. The best material on this 12-track anthology, gathering tunes from his 1982-1992 tenure at Columbia, is based on traditional country and bluegrass forms. Listening to this material after exposure to back-to-basics alt country bands might make it sound a little slick and prettied up by comparison, but compared to contemporary '70s countrypolitan material, it sounds like manna from heaven. From the rollicking "Lovin' All Night" to a swell pair of duets with Roseanne Cash and Mary Chapin Carpenter, these songs are as good as '80s Nashville country got....
