Jake Preston (Nicholas Cage) is a U. S. Army helicopter pilot helping the DEA fight the drug cartels in South America, when his close friend is killed by mercenary Eric Stoller (Eric Stoller), who the cartels have hired and equipped with a air combat helicopter. Heading back to the U. S., Preston applies for and gets reassigned to an Apache squadron where the commander, Brad Little (Tommy Lee Jones), is training pilots to take on air-to-air combat . With the assistance of scout pilot Billie Lee Guthrie (Sean Young), Preston hopes to go back and stop Stoller from interfering with any further operations.
