Beautiful By Nature by Kitty Cantrell Zebras live in stable family groups with several females (mares) and their offspring. The herd is led by an adult male (stallion). During travel, the group is led by the dominant female and her foal. Members recognize each other by sight, voice and smell. A female may produce a foal every year after a gestation period of 361-390 days. A female guards her baby when itâs first born, giving it time to learn her pattern of stripes. Minutes after being born, a foal wobbles to its feet and within an hour can run by its mothers side.
