This is one of a large collection of antique 19th century (some 18th century) original etchings, photogravures and prints that I am posting today. I am also posting beautifully engraved Railroad stocks, antique documents, and other artwork. I am scanning these images using my HP in order to get a jpeg image (as opposed to taking photographs of them). Many of these legal documents are from the archives of Civil War General James Simmons who was an attorney (?and Judge) in Charleston SC before and after the War between the States. Some are signed by individuals who later became officers and soldiers in the Rev. War or the Civil War.
These documents have historical interest because they provide information about many of the historical landmarks, properties and people of Charleston SC pre Civil War Era. Many individuals researching their own genealogy will find it interesting to obtain a document signed or written by an ancestor or dealing with matters relating to an ancestor.
Many of these documents have beautiful old script that looks beautiful framed as wall Art. Paper and manuscript historians will appreciate that many of these documents, when held to the light, show old hand laid paper marks and wonderfully designed watermarks (the federal eagle) of early Georgian or Federal paper manufacturers.
Keep in mind that colonial paper was hard to come by, not like today, and even legal documents can be written on just pieces of paper cut from a larger sheet. No envelopes, the folded document also served as the "envelope" and the TO/From information was written on the outside of the folded document.
A piece of our Colonial History - The lives of our founding fathers and their children - an interesting conversation piece whether kept in a notebook of old documents or framed to hang on a wall (please use UV glass to protect it).
