Pattaya tourist info Thailand

Pattaya is an energetic city, evident from the pace that stikes you when you arrive. For sure it’s a party city more than a quiet coastal destination, with plenty of activities both night and day. However you can escape to idyllic offshore islands, alternatively take the family to one of the amusement or themed parks, get in a round of golf, have fun with watersports, go shopping, do the spa ‘thing’, or enjoy the fun and slightly naughty night scene.

Pattaya Bay is centrally located and a big attraction for tourists

Pattaya Bay is centrally located and a big attraction for tourists

Tourist information is freely available in Pattaya, and can be obtained from one of the several Tourist Information Centres scattered about the central area or, for a much greater variety, from any of the myriad of travel agents, tour operators or from your hotel foyer. With around four million tourists every year, Pattaya provides activities to suit all age groups and tastes, with many day-trips available by boat or car to surrounding attractions.

The English newspapers and magazines are full of interesting and creative ideas for the tourist; information includes local news, events and festivals, places to visit and where to eat. The Pattaya Mail, which comes out every Friday, even has a 24-hour television station (channel 6) and regular news bulletins on other channels full of advertisements for interesting days or evenings. As well as the beach life here, which includes swimming, diving, parasailing, jetskiing and fishing, the choice of over twenty golf courses and diverse other activities are enough to ensure that most people visit more than once.

Shopping is a great attraction in Pattaya for the tourist, with shopping malls and a profusion of smaller shops and cheap market stalls.

The numerous bars and restaurants in Pattaya ensure that the nightlife is always lively, and the fun-loving Thais are very good company at any time of day or night, and the restaurants cater for all tastes.

Pattaya sight seeing

Even Pattaya has some beautiful Thai temples

Even Pattaya has some beautiful Thai temples

Pattaya’s sights are mainly modern, much reflecting the town itself. Sights often double-up as activities but there’s still an array of interesting things to see, especially if you’re willing to travel a little. The beaches, several impressive temples and entertainment venues all combine to make Pattaya sight seeing a worthy activity.

While it may not have the traditional grandeur and historical relevance of many places in Thailand, Pattaya has a lot of more contemporary attractions to keep travellers amused. Some popular outings include Underwater World (marine aquarium – near Tesco, Thanon Sukhumvit), the Museum of Bottle Art (near bus station, Thanon Sukhumvit), showing miniature art such as Dutch windmills and Thai temples, all inside the confines of glass bottles. The entertaining Ripley’s Believe it or Not museum (Royal Garden Plaza, Beach Road) is home to host of exhibits from the traditional to the bizarre.

There is something of a replica theme in Pattaya, for besides the bottle art, there are several other attractions which are miniature replicas of larger, well-known architectural feats. The first is the hugely ambitious Sanctuary of Truth (Naklua Soi 12). Built on a 1:1 replica scale, the structure is designed to mirror the great buildings of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The work is still in progress but, visitors are permitted. The daw dropping beauty of the main temple makes it worth the hefty entrance fee. The other main replica tourist sight is that of Mini Siam (Thanon Sukhumvit) – a 1:25 scale collection of both Thailand, and the world’s most renowned monuments. Come along and have yourself pictured in front of the Statue of Liberty.

For more traditional cultural sightseeing in Pattaya, you can travel 18kms down Thanon Sukhumvit to Nong Nooch Village where you’ll be met by traditional dancers, pleasant natural scenery and playful elephants who’ll be willing to let you enjoy the thrill of a ride. The orchid garden here is reputed to be the world’s largest, so if you like flowers, it may be worth the trip for this alone. The Elephant Village (7kms down Sukhumwit road) provides more long distance travel via elephant back, offering 90-minute mini-treks around its own park, and offers whitewater rafting also.

Most hotels, guest houses and travel shops in Pattaya offer trips and tour packages to almost anywhere within reason, and usually at a reasonable rate. For a half-day trip like Nong Nooch Village, you can expect to pay around 500 baht for transport from your hotel, entrance and lunch. Other Pattaya sightseeing tours are on offer like the Pattaya Discovery Tour, which takes in a Buddhist temples, Monkey mountains, beaches, aquariums, stonecutting villages, and orchid farms. For information on these trips and more, contact your hotel or local travel shop on arrival in Pattaya.

Pattaya’s sights may not be complete without a trip to Koh Larn. Only 40 minutes from Pattaya by boat, the island has beautiful white sand, and clear blue swimming water. A day trip here is a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of the Pattaya town while still offering good facilities and activities. You can relax on the beach, or go swimming, snorkelling, water skiing, or even parasailing here. There are also several decent restaurants serving a variety of cuisine.

Pattaya water sports

Pattaya’s location on the Eastern seaboard and its reputation as a seaside resort with a tropical climate mean the town lends itself ideally to water sports. Here you can find most types of water sports from jet-skis to snorkelling; parasailing to deep-sea diving; water-skiing to yacht racing; sailing in a dinghy; diving in beautiful coral coves and swimming in the warm tropical waters

There's no shortage of watersports offered on the beaches

There's no shortage of watersports offered on the beaches

For parasailing, the boats will pick you up from the Bali Hi Pier and take you out to the pontoons where instruction to novices and experts alike will be given. This pursuit cannot be undertaken on windy days, and safety is a key factor. A parasailing experience, however, will give you an unforgettable and fabulous view of Pattaya Bay.

Sailing is very popular in Jomtien, where various national and international regattas take place and smaller boats are readily available for hire. Many sailors like to sail over to Koh Larn or one of the smaller islands for the day and return in the afternoon. The yacht clubs in Jomtien are all mentioned in the local English directories available in Pattaya; however, you can also rent a dinghy by the hour

Snorkelling is family-friendly activity which is popular

Snorkelling is family-friendly activity which is popular

Diving is a very popular pursuit on the Eastern seaboard and Pattaya has several specialist companies with five star PADI instructors and supervisors. There are many dive sites around Pattaya and with an all year round diving season, the profusion of coral and fish, a sea temperature of around 28 degrees and cheap prices, this is a favourite venue for many divers from all over the world.

Swimming in the sea is very popular with both Thais and Europeans. Don’t be surprised if the Thais go in fully clothed. They are not used to showing intimate areas in public, and it’s warm enough to dry off very quickly when they get out. With the sea at roughly the same temperature as the air, swimming in the sea is very pleasant, and in the hot season in Pattaya the same 28 degrees in the sea seems very cooling.

Deep sea fishing is another good activity in Pattaya if you fancy your hand at landing a big fish. Several operations run daily trips and often return with some impressive catches. Not quite the Hemingway Cuban adventure but worthwhile if you’re into big game fishing. Sail fish, queen fish, barracuda, marlin, cobia and shark are all caught in these waters, but you usually need to charter the entire boat, so put together a group.

There are several fun water and beach activities offered from Pattaya bay, such as banana boat rides, jetskiing (in the right places!), volleyball, beach football and more. Simply show up and you’ll find companies present, offering various options. Koh Larn, the offshore island also has some facilities in a nice environment, including snorkelling equipment rental and clear waters.

Festivals In Pattaya

There are many festivals in Thailand and Thai people love an excuse for a party or celebration. Pattaya celebrates all of the Thai festivals and a few local ones too. These include religious, traditional, cultural and contemporary festivals. Often you will stumble upon an event taking place in the main centre of the city, such as the walk street, which always adds a charming surprise to any visit.

Travellers footage: Songkran water festival

The biggest of the Pattaya festivals is Songkran, which is the traditional Thai New Year in April, and is nothing less than a riotous water fight. Usually scheduled for the second week of April (according to the lunar calendar), in Pattaya the festival extends for at least a few extra days during which good natured water fights take place all over the town during the day. The town is packed at this time, and it is a good idea to book early.

Night life in Pattaya - night life guide

Pattaya's nightlife is centred on the go go scene

Pattaya's nightlife is centred on the go go scene

Pattaya is internationally famous for its nightlife, and has a reputation as Thailand’s naughtiest city. Many flock to Pattaya for the party atmosphere where the nightlife characterises the city and self gratification is on the menu wherever you go.

Whatever you are looking for, Pattaya nightlife has it all, from pub restaurants with sedate music to go-go bars and from trendy packed discos to world famous transsexual cabaret shows. Pattaya is also a great place for a pub crawl with very little distance between them, and many different bar types located closely.

Probably the most famous nightlife area of Pattaya is Walking Street in South Pattaya. From the evening until the next morning this road is closed to vehicles. The street itself and its adjoining lanes, known as sois, are all packed with go-go bars, massage parlours, beer bars and restaurants. It is crowded daily and the noisy bustle attracts those from all over. A walk down the street gives a visitor an eye opening experience of what Pattaya nightlife is all about. Apart from ubiquitous girly bars, Walking Street also has an Irish style pub and several discos which are usually packed and loud. Most of the action continues until two in the morning in this area.

Central Pattaya around sois 7 and 8 down to the beach is not as raucous as South Pattaya, but there are still a mass of beer bars, restaurants and other bars to contribute to the nightlife in Pattaya. This is an area frequented by many of the foreign residents of the city, and is more suited to a combination of drinking and chatting. As with all bars in the town, girls will happily sit with men if provided with a drink.

Pattaya go go girls

Pattaya is full of go go bars and it’s one of the main reasons many visitors come to the city. Unlike most of Thailand, the sex industry thrives in Pattaya as long as everyone sticks to the rules. Prostitution is actually illegal in Thailand but it’s tolerated in certain areas. There are plenty of go go bars in Pattaya, most of the largest being situated around Walking Street and in Pattayaland, nearby. There are more on the lanes leading off Beach Road, as well as a few in Jomtien and North Pattaya if you don’t want to travel too far from your hotel.

Go go dancers are a key attraction in the bars

Go go dancers are a key attraction in the bars

No money, no honey - the girls mean businessWhat are you looking at?There's always plenty of girls for you to buy a drink

The atmosphere in the go go bars of Pattaya is very relaxed and has none of the clandestine character and sleaze of red light districts in other countries. The girls are fun, friendly and willing to go home with you for a reasonable fee. If you are new to Pattaya you needn’t feel embarrassed, and can pop into a bar and quietly sit watching sport on the TV or the girls dancing, over a beer. The girls will approach you and although some are quite forward they are, on the whole, respectful. Also, unlike bars in specific ‘go go areas’ of Bangkok there is no pressure to buy overpriced drinks. All of the go go bars in Pattaya are entered through a curtain or door, with plenty of touts outside, mainly pretty ladies to guide you in. Most don’t charge for entry.
