CHINESE EMBROIDERY WITH CERTIFICATE OF ANTIQUITY THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL, GARDEN SCENE, ANTIQUE CHINESE EMBROIDERED MAT. IT IS EMBROIDERED WITH THE FORBIDDEN STITCH. THIS COMES WITH A 1977-DATED CERTIFICATE OF ANTIQUITY FROM THE HONG KONG ART CRAFT MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION LTD. THE COA STATES THAT AS OF JUNE 1, 1977 THIS ITEM WAS OVER 100 YEARS OLD. TODAY, IT IS OVER 134 YEARS OLD. THERE ARE TWO STORIES RELATING TO THE NAME "FORBIDDEN STITCH" - ONE IS THAT THE STITCH IS SO FINE, THAT TO SPEND HOURS ON A DESIGN WITH THIS STITCH LED TO EYE STRAIN, AND WAS FORBIDDEN TO BE USED BY YOUNG GIRLS. ANOTHER IS THAT THE STITCH ORIGINATED IN THE FORBIDDEN CITY OF CHINA. THE MAT MEASURES 14 Â¼" X 10 Â¼" IT IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH SOME FADING OF THE COLORS, COMMENSURATE WITH ITS AGE.
