I had enjoyed reading Mark Schorer's afterword in the copy of Lewis' insightful novel Arrowsmith that I read as a high school student. Some years later I stumbled upon this chronicle of Lewis' life and literary career at a University of Chicago bookstore. Schorer's book makes the life of the Nobel-winning Novelist seem as interesting as any novel. As is the case for many biographies, it is the early years of the person's young life that are the most fascinating. Sinclair Lewis grew up in an isolated town in the provincial Midwest--the essence of which he would later reveal to the world in his groundbreaking novel Main Street (Barnes & Noble Classics Series) (B&N Classics). A disaffected and alienated youth with few friends, the extremely pious and religiously devout young Lewis went on to attend college at Oberlin, where immersed himself in the college's sincere Christianity. After a brief stay at Oberlin, Lewis went on to Yale. At first a curiosity due to his Midwestern speech and manners, Lewis eventually earned the respect of his fellow students--and--to an even greater extent, his professors. During various breaks in the Yale academic year Lewis set off on various adventurous sojourns. He worked on a cattle boat that steamed from Portland Maine to Liverpool--thereby earning his first look at the Old World as well as the lives of the workmen aboard the ship. Another year he traveled to Panama with the intention of finding a job in the building the Panama Canal--but returned without finding any work. Lewis went on to win a seat as editor of the Yale literary magazine. Following graduation Lewis worked for various magazines and newspapers while independently submitting stories to various publications. His first literary success was actually a child's adventure book "Hike and the Airplane". Of course many other successes followed--but it was these accounts of Lewis' early life that I most enjoyed.
