Item Description
Former employees of the Dunbar and Miller Glass Co. formed the Kanawha Glass Co. in 1955 after Dunbar closed in 1953. The new company was located in Dunbar, West Virginia and named after the Kanawha River. At first, Kanawha produced clear, decorated glass items. By the 1960s Kanawha was competing with the likes of Blenko, Rainbow, Pilgrim, Viking and others, producing the colorful decorative forms popular in the mid-century, much in crackle glass. In the 1970s opaque cased glass was popular and Kanawha provided many styles, such as "Peachblow" and "Milk Glass".Kanawha produced a lot of pitchers, vases and art glasses and a few baskets and figurines.Kanawha was purchased by another glass company in 1987 and closed its doors forever in 1989. Our basket is a yellow and red crackle glass basket. Crackle glass was made by blowing molten glass into a shape in a mold, then dipping it into water or sawdust, and then refiring it to seal the cracks. This process resulted in glass that sparkles in sunlight. Crackle glass was a specialty at Kanawha Glass Co. and formed a large part of their production. This basket is about 9 inches high, 4 inches wide and has a looped clear glass handle. The foot of the basket is in yellow ribbed glass and the basket itself is in red crackle glass . It is in mint condition (no chips or cracks) and has the original label of Kanawha still attached. A collector told me this is possible a pretty rare specimen, as he believes that the mold they used for this piece was broken and that they never replaced it with a similar mold. We could not verify this statement with cold hard facts, but on the other hand we were not able to track down a similar basket with a ribbed foot, made by Kanawha. Rare or not this is a beautiful piece of art glass!
