When Zoe's best friend's daughter, Jenny, dies as a result of an accident, Zoe finds her anger is taking control of her life. She confronts the surgeon that was not available to perform any life saving procedures to save the young girl's life that fateful night, and at first thinks that her assumptions about the doctor are correct, that all he cares for is his salary and his golf game. However, as the two get to know each other, something changes in her assessment of Philip Barry, a man she remembers from her childhood years, when she was the daughter of the Barry's housekeeper. While Zoe sorts out her feelings for Philip, she is also dealing with her son and his good-for-nothing father. Philip is also dealing with child-rearing issues, in particular with his only daughter Molly, who seems to be going through some emotional problems that are more serious than what the average teenager goes through.
