The primary item was part of the collection of Henry J. Hauschild Jr., who billed himself as a âPhysiognomist â Bibliopolist â Cognoscente di Eccellentissimoâ, and was the very proud owner of the world famous "Nose Galleryâ at âThe Oldest Houseâ in Victoria, Texas. Henry Senior founded the Hauschild Music Company which was later owned by his 8 children and eventually the four brothers before being closed in 1980; After the Opera House Restaurant failed, the space became the Bible Book Store and later Opera House Antiques; This item was part of the leftover inventory of the Music Store and at one time was on consignment at the Bible Book Store;
"Musicologist and historian, Delmer Rogers, longtime member of the staff of the Department of Music at the University of Texas, is of the opinion that the Hauschild Music Company, founded in Victoria, Texas in 1891, was the second oldest institution to commercially publish sheet music in Texas. (Thos. Goggan of Houston being the first.) Also, his extensive research indicates that Hauschild's was the first in Texas to issues music with Spanish titles. About thirty were published, many by talented writers, and sold in large numbers. In addition, probing seems to prove that Hauschilds was the first to publish the efforts of several of the music-loving Germans of the area. Most interesting, too, is that the spritely composition, the Cowboy Rag offered in 1904 possibly was the purcursor of this genre of popular music." taken from "The Cognoscenti Collections";

HISTORICAL NOTE: "Nino Oliviero: Italian musician & composer (Naples, February 13, 1918 - Rome, March 1, 1980). Great & pure musician of Neapolitan music, his strong & rare personality along with his great ability to compose such wonderful music are unforgettable. Born in Naples at the end of the great war, Nino Oliviero showed an outstanding talent for music ever since he was a child. His mother was the 1st to have this intuition & for this reason decided to have a âquartinoâ made for him, a very small violin built on purpose for his tiny little hands, at the tender age of five. She did this secretly from her husband, who certainly would not have understood the gesture of encouraging such a decision, that of music, in a time so uncertain. After only a few years of studying, the secret was unveiled. The father was unwillingly taken to a musical audition for children & was literally amazed when he saw his little Nino perform a sweet serenata for solo violin in such a wonderful way. From that moment on Nino began his long & great musical career. The young talent arrived to the diploma at only sixteen. He achieved the diploma (with the highest grade) at the San Pietro a Majella, the most prestigious music Conservatory in Italy. His examiner was the great artist, Francesco Cilea, author of Arlesiana. In the meantime, he entered the Oriental University of Naples & began composing his 1st songs, winning the 1st prize at the Contest of Piedigrotta with â Primaveraâ. This prize enabled him to become one of the upcoming young talents of the time & gave him the possibility to attend the most important cultural & musical circles of the city. His inspiring lifetime friend & teacher was Libero Bovio, one of the greatest Neapolitan poets (author of âReginellaâ, â O paese dâ âo soleâ, âZappatoreâ). Libero had the habit of opening his home to young & talented artists to whom he joyfully gave incomparable tips on art & culture. During the same period, Nino composed many other songs, always inspired by a warm & profound sentiment & dominated by the love he had for his wonderful city, Naples.: âsuspirataâ, âtristezza eâ viernoâ, all based on the verses of the great Ferdinando Russo ( songs which were later recorded by Vittorio de Sica). Then came the darkness of the 2nd World War & Nino was called to become a soldier. The disaster & the destruction of the country eventually led to the beginning of a new era of peace. In 1945, the young artist ( who is newlywed) decided to move to Rome, a city that offered more job opportunities than devastated Naples. He found a job working for FIAT, a job too tight for a free talent as he was, yet even there he managed to apply his creative talent as a composer & came up with an advertising jingle for the launch of the new Topolino car (âla500Câ). A year went by & he finally got his 1st opportunity: the young musician met the famous editor Leonardi which believed in him so much that he asked him to join the Leonardi company, making his dream come true. He wrote many other beautiful songs such as â Non conosci Napoliâ, ââil pianino eâ partito da Napoliâ, âPovero Ammore Mio,â Until the greatest successes like âNu quarto eâ lunaâ with verses by Tito Manlio, âQuanno staje cummeâ (verses & music), â O ciucciarielloâ, written with his friend Roberto Murolo, âGiuvanne cu aâ chitarraâ, with Stefano Canzio. From then onwards Ninoâs career has been luminous & overwhelming. Driven by an extreme & inexhaustible impulse to write music, he started composing movie soundtracks of the time, (Domenica dâagosto, Canzone Appassionata, Cuore di mamma, Napoli sole mio taken from one of his beautiful songs). In 1962, he composed the soundtrack for âMondo Caneâ the new film of Gualtiero Jacopetti, a director he had already worked with for a famous film magazine of the time âIeri, Oggi, Domaniâ. The movie had an extraordinary success all over the world, also due to its soundtrack, especially because one of the songs (called âMoreâ) actually won a nomination at the Oscars in 1963. The 1st time ever for an Italian musician. At this point Oliviero was a renowned International musician. He won the prestigious âGrammyâ award (the American Oscar for music) & continued to compose successful soundtracks worldwide (âMondo cane2â, âuna Moglie Americanaâ with Ugo Tognazzi, âla Moglie Giapponeseâ with Gastone Moschin, to the point of being chosen by the famous Vincent Minnelli to compose the music of his last film âNinaâ, with Liza Minnelli & Ingrid Bergman. Oliviero did all of this without ever betraying his Neapolitan heart. At the age of 62 a sudden illness put an end to the life & the career of this magnificent musician, A man of great personality, able to touch the hearts of everyone who had a chance to know him & anyone who was just able to listen to his music.";
HISTORICAL NOTE: "Born in 1929, Ray Jessel hails from Cardiff, where he received his music degree from the University of Wales. He won a scholarship to study composition for a year in Paris as a graduate student with Arthur Honegger. He emigrated to Canada, where he began his career as an orchestrator/composer for CBC radio & television. His 1st work for the musical theatre was for the annual Canadian satirical revue SPRING THAW, where he struck up a collaboration with Marian Grudeff. This led to their writing material for Julius Mond's UPSTAIRS AT THE DOWNSTAIRS revues in New York & brought them to the notice of Broadway producer Alexander H. Cohen, who hired them to write songs for his Sherlock Holmes musical BAKER STREET (1965). The song "A Married Man," sung in the show by Dr. Watson, became a hit recording by Richard Burton. The team subsequently wrote the score for a revival by Cohen of HELLZAPOPPIN, directed by George Abbott, which played at the Montreal Expo '67. The show did not come to New York, but the title song was recorded by both Jimmy Durante & Louis Armstrong. The Armstrong recording is available on the CD, "What A Wonderful World" (Louis Armstrong, MCA Records 1988). Other songs of the period still available on CD are "Sunshine," on "The Very Best Of Vikki Carr," & "All," on "The Best Of James Darren." With the closure of HELLZAPOPPIN, Jessel sought greener pastures in Hollywood, where he has had a successful career in television, writing 1st musical material then comedy sketches for "The Dean Martin Show," "The Carol Burnett Show," many John Denver specials, & a long stint with "The Love Boat." Among many other episodes he wrote the two-hour movie, LOVE BOAT - THE MUSICAL starring Ethel Merman, Carol Channing, Ann Miller, Van Johnson, Cab Calloway & Della Reese. Jessel was also writer/producer of the long-running series "Head of the Class." Ray Jessel returned to Broadway in 1979, being chosen by Richard Rodgers to write additional lyrics for I REMEMBER MAMA. He wrote the lyrics to four songs in the show including "A Little Bit More" â the last song Richard Rodgers was to write for the musical stage. With his current partner Cynthia Thompson, Jessel wrote the song "Whatever Happened To Melody?" It was recorded by Michael Feinstein, on his CD "Forever" & has since been recorded by David Campbell on his CD "Yesterday Is Now" (Phillips/Polygram 1996) & by Masters Of Harmony on their CD, "California Gold Rush" (1996). Another recent Jessel/Thompson recording is their song "I'm All Right Now" on John Pizzarelli's CD "New Standards." Among their recent work-in-progress is a musical version of Daniel Defoe's MOLL FLANDERS, from which the ballad "Please, Don't Let It Be Love" was nominated for best song at the recent International Musical of the Year Contest (1996) & is available on CD "Best Songs" on Columbus Records, with Al Jarreau. The team also wrote scripts & songs for the Shari Lewis PBS show "The Charlie Horse Music Pizza". Michael Feinstein calls Ray Jessel "the millennium Noel Coward," & Jessel made his debut (at 72!) as a Cabaret performer at Hollywood's Gardenia room in April, 2002. He has since played to a series of sell-out performances there, at LA's famed Jazz Bakery & Toronto's Top o' the Senator, in New York at Danny's Skylight Room & at Don't Tell Mama. Jessel was a featured star in the Mabel Mercer Foundation's prestigious Cabaret Convention in Palm Springs &, most recently, at New York's Town Hall where, says the Hollywood Reporter, he "brought down the house" on opening night.";
HISTORICAL NOTE: "Marian Grudeff (April 18, 1927 â November 4, 2006) was a Canadian pianist & musical theatre composer. Born in Toronto, she studied piano under Mona Bates & performed Liszt's Hungarian Fantasy with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at the age of 11. She subsequently gave her 1st solo recital at the Eaton Auditorium. She performed extensively in Canada & the US in the 1940s, & taught at the Royal Conservatory of Music from 1948 to 1952. In the 1950s & 1960s she was part of the Toronto theatrical revue Spring Thaw. Grudeff & collaborator Ray Jessel subsequently moved to New York City, where they collaborated on the Broadway musicals Baker Street & a new version of Hellzapoppin'. Grudeff & Jessel also cowrote the musical Life Can Be - Like Wow, which was produced at the Charlottetown Festival in 1969. Grudeff returned to the Royal Conservatory of Music in 1972, teaching there until 1979. She resumed her concert performances in 1976, giving recitals in Toronto & Bulgaria. After 1981, she continued to teach piano privately in Toronto until her retirement.";
HISTORICAL NOTE: "Nico Fidenco, artistic name of Domenico Colarossi, (Rome, January 24, 1933), is an Italian singer who gained considerable popularity from 1960 onwards, after the release of the film What a sky, (Italian: Su nel cielo, taken from the film of Francesco Maselli I delfini).";
HISTORICAL NOTE: "Frank Joseph Lisbona, better known as Frankie Randall, (born January 11, 1938, Passaic, New Jersey) is an American singer & actor. His acting credits include The Dean Martin Summer Show & the 1973 film Day of the Wolves. Randall also starred in Sonny & Cher's 1st movie in 1964, Wild on the Beach. Whereas the film was not well-received, Day Of The Wolves (starring Richard Egan) is generally respected as a decent dramatic film. He also appeared many times on the Dean Martin TV show, & hosted the summer version of the show when Martin was not available. He was also prominent in the administrative side of the music business in Atlantic City, but eventually gave that up to return to performing. He released dozens of RCA singles & albums from the 1960s onwards. After starting out in pop music, Randall, an accomplished piano-player, found his niche in the style of The Great American Songbook, singing those classic melodies of the 20th century that were made famous by many other Italian-American crooners, & other performers, including Sammy Davis Jr, Steve Allen & Ella Fitzgerald. As of 2008, Randall can be heard chatting & playing lots of those American records on The Music Of Your Life, a syndicated radio show that is heard daily across 200 radio stations in the USA & on the internet. His version of the song "I Can See for Miles" by The Who is included in Rhino Records' album Golden Throats: The Great Celebrity Sing Off (the 1st of four Golden Throats compilations).";
