 Ted Barton returned to his home town after several years only to find a strange city in its place.It had the same name, but that was not all. When he insisted that he himself was a native, the folks showed him his own death notice in a newspaper dated the day he'd originally left!
And this was not the strangest thing happening in Millgate! Barton saw transparent people walking through walls; little clay golems running around like rats; and a web of terror was tightening around Barton himself.
As he struggled his way to the incredible explanation for what had happened, he began to realize that the problem extended far beyond the little valley that held Millgate. It was the entire universe that was out of whack!

Youngster Dane Thorson is denied assignment to a prosperous trading company ship, and sent to what he considers a dead-end life as a crew member of a free trader, traveling the galaxy and making - or losing - money catch-as-catch-can.
