1988 Kentucky Derby Glass
114th Running
5 1/4 inch tall glass is in excellent condition with mint graphics on a frosted background
Back of the glass lists the previous 113 Kentucky Derby Winners and the years with special markings for the fillies and the Triple Crown Winners
The 1988 Kentucky Derby Winner was Winning Colors and the jockey was Gary Stevens in a time of 2:02 1/5.
Winning Colors was just one of three fillies to ever win the Kentucky Derby; she led wire to wire, wining over Forty Niner by a neck
She went on to finish third in the Preakness Stakes and finished last in the Belmont Stakes after burning herself out in an early speed dual with Risen Star who went on to win the race
The fall of 1988 in the Breeders Cup Distaff, Winning Colors and Personal Ensign finished a race that is described as one of the most exciting finishes in Breeders Cup history. With Winning Colors on the lead and yards to go, Personal Ensign made a final charge and won the race by a ‘lip’
She won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding 3 Year Old Filly in 1988 and also was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame
At age four, she won only two of seven starts, hampered by breathing difficulties and surgery and was retired
Winning Colors was euthanized February 17, 2008 at the age of 23 following complications from colic. She is buried at Greentree Farm
