1984 Kentucky Derby Glass
110th Running
5 1/4 inch tall glass is in excellent condition with mint graphics on a frosted background
Back of the glass lists the previous 109 Kentucky Derby Winners and the years with special markings for the fillies and the Triple Crown Winners
The 1984 Kentucky Derby Winner was Swale and the jockey was Laffitt Pincay Jr. in a time of 2:02 2/5.
Swale was the son of the 1977 Triple Crown Winner Seattle Slew.
He was actually the second choice to run in the Derby behind the darling of the stables and undefeated 2 year old Devil’s Bag. But when Devil’s Bag lost his form before the Derby, Swale was sent in his place.
Although Swale ended up seventh in the Preakness Stakes, he went on to win the grueling Belmont Stakes
One week later, on June 17, 1984, Swale dropped dead. Five autopsies by five different doctors could not conclusively show cause of death. One doctor thought Swale may have died of either an aneurism or a heart attack but no evidence was found. Foul play was never totally ruled out.
