5 1/4 inch tall glass is in excellent condition with mint graphics on a frosted background
Back of the glass lists the previous 107 Kentucky Derby Winners and the years with special markings for the fillies and the Triple Crown Winners
The 1982 Kentucky Derby Winner was Gato Del Sol and the jockey was Eddie Delahoussaye in a time of 2:02 3/5.
Gato Del Sol went off in the Kentucky Derby with odds of 21 – 1, the third longest odds in the race, he won by a total of 2 1/2 lengths and had the 10th highest payoff in Derby history
In a surprising move immediately after the Derby, Gato Del Sol’s owners announced he was skipping the Preakness Stakes and aiming for the Belmont Stakes instead. Their decision marked the first time in 22 years that the Derby winner did not choose to go for the Triple Crown
Gato Del Sol finished second in the Belmont Stakes, fourteen lengths behind the winner, Conquistador Cielo
He remained racing in the New York Circuit until an ankle injury ended his 1982 racing season after finishing 5th in the Traverse Stakes
He returned to racing for the next couple of years, racking up few wins and was retired to stud where he had little success as a sire and was sold in 1992 to a breeding operation in Germany where he continued to under perform
As a stallion, Gato Del Sol sired just two stakes winners and eight stakes-placed runners
In 1999, his original owners bought him back after they became concerned upon hearing the fate of another American Champion, Exceller, who was sent to a Swedish slaughterhouse, and he was pensioned at the farm where he was born
He was euthanized on August 7, 2007 due to health complications at the age of 28
