Item Description
This is for an extremely rare piece, featuring The
Shadow, the character from pulps and radio shows in the 1940s and
1950s. This is The Shadow Crime Fighter Detection Belt, issued in 1976
by Madison Industries who were located in Hackensack, NJ. To give you an
idea on the scarcity and value of this item, one actually sold earlier
this year (2011) for $150-something on a rather well-known online
user-to-user auction site (not sure I can mention the name, but I'm sure
you know what I'm talking about...). That one had a box that was
crushed to being nearly flattened in spots, nearly all of the yellow had
faded to an off-white color, at least one of the pieces was broken, the
cello was mostly missing (the "window" in the front) and while not
mentioned in the seller's listing, it looked like there was also water
damage. That was the first one I've seen sell since 2005.
Now - about this one: all items are included and still tied to the
original back-board (the walkie talkie with flashing light and Morse
Code, the Realistic Cap Fighting Gun, the Crime Fighter Handcuffs,
Whistle, and of course, the Official Shadow Detection Belt. It does not
appear these items have been removed from the box. We haven't, and we
have owned this for over 2 decades. The box is fully intact with cello
and measures 14" x 8" x 2 1/4". The yellow is still yellow. There are
the following rubs to the face of the box: In the blue ring with the
artwork of The Shadow punching someone, there are a couple of rubs to
the outer left of the circle showing white, along with a small rub in
the "a" of "Shadow" (again, showing white). The end flaps show a couple
of very small rubs. There is also a small black scrape about the "a" in
Shadow on the face of the box, and there is also a thin darkish scrape
at the lower end of the blue circle, which extends into the yellow and
ends just above the copyright statement. There are a few minute dark-ish
specs to the left of the blue circle right at the edge of the box. Face
of box has some slight bowing from age on the left side. Back of box
shows dirt. The end flaps kind of bow outwards some, again from age and
display. There is edgewear to the end flaps. There is a small wrinkle to
the face on the left hand side just across from "The" in "The Shadow"
and a similar crease above the "w" (again in "Shadow), and one very
small one on the right side about halfway down the red area (the red
from The Shadow's cape). The top apron has a small circular darkish spot
at the "T" of "Belt" - you can feel this spot with your finger.
While I have pointed out the flaws to the box, this is to try to be as
detailed as possible. This example of this item is in outstanding shape,
particularly when factoring in the condition of the few remaining
copies of this that are out there.
If purchasing, please don't hesitate to request an accurate shipping
quote to your zip code in advance (and wait for an invoice which
reflects that quote after purchasing). What is listed is an estimate and
a max that would be charged, since ArtFire does not have a shipping
calculator, and depending on how far away you are, it might be less.
This will ship safely and carefully packaged via USPS with insurance and
signature confirmation to ensure it's safe delivery into your
possession.
This truly is a fantastic item, and is one of the toughest 1970s Shadow items to locate! Any questions, please ask!
