“In the main this book is based on photographs which should actually have
gone up in the smoke 1945. It is fact that all the negatives of the photos
taken by the war reporters of the Waffen-SS were completely destroyed on
highest order shortly before the end of the war. Due to a lucky chance the
small contact prints were saved to large extend. These almost 100.000 contact
prints (24x36mm) are without captions and mostly undated so that it was only
possible to interpret them by painstaking research, reconstruction,
comparisons, by identifying people and place. Naturally here and there errors
are inevitable but these can be accepted if on the other hand it has been
possible to give a comprehensive survey of the fighting Waffen-SS by using
these impressive photographs.
We are indebted to Fotomeister Werner Held for making these optimal photo
reproduction possible. When the Publishers produced this book, they were
conscious of the fact that a portrayal of the fighting of the Waffen-SS will
always be incomplete, although we were able to use hithero unpublished
pictures. Admist of the falling bombs of the invasion, during the battles in
Italy and during the final battle in the Reich photos were rarely taken. The
available material from this time is poor.
This book is supposed to show the soldiers of the Waffen-SS fighting, those
who stood and fought in the forward front line and who gave their best in
military actions. We emphatically dissociate ourselves from those who within
the special units carried out their tragic business, from the “desk murderersâ€
and from the Highest Command of the Waffen-SS. The men of the Waffen-SS,
however, their officers and commanders, fully deserve a fair judgment. They
were soldiers like their brothers in arms of the Army and their sacrifice of
killed, wounded and soldiers missed do not count any less than those of the
other soldiers and their former opponents.â€

„Dieses Buch wurde zusammengestellt
aus Bilder, die 1945 auf Befehl des Reichssicherheits-Hauptamtes vernichtet
werden sollten. Tatsächlich wurden die Negative auch verbrannt. Wohl mehr durch
Zufall blieben die kleinen Kontaktabzüge erhalten. Diese ca. 100.000
Kontaktbilder kamen wieder zum Vorschein, und aus ihnen wurden die besten
Aufnahmen für dieses Buch ausgewählt. Ein Bildband, der jeden, der das Foto als
Dokument zu werten in der Lage ist, in seinem Bann schlägt.“
