Item Description
Nominated for Most Historically Significant Coin for the 2011 Coin of the Year Awards.
This coin from the Austrian Mint takes you back to the days of knights, kings and Crusades, with its depiction of a legendary tale involving a shipwreck, disguise, capture of King Richard of England, and his eventual release upon payment of a hefty ransom of silver to Duke Leopold. Interestingly enough it was Duke Leopold who created the Vienna Mint to strike coinage from all the ransomed silver he received. The Vienna Mint became the Austrian Mint – the same mint that produced this coin, which is part of the Tales and Legends of Austria series.
The obverse design features King Richard's minstrel, Blondel, riding horseback across the countryside near Durnstein castle in search of King Richard. The reverse design shows Duke Leopold and two guards arresting King Richard, disguised as a pilgrim.
