Item Description
This statue is an original Inuit
soapstone statue, depicting an Inuit hunter wrestling with a seal.
The statue is carved out of speckled soapstone. It is about 5 1/2
inches high and about 5 1/4 wide at the base. It is is in great
condition. No chips or breaks anywhere.
In the base are
numbers incised : E 9 150 E 9952. After research, we found out that
these numbers identify the maker of the art. The numbers are the
disc number of the artist. Disc numbers were used by the Government
of Canada and were similar to dog-tags. The discs were small, made of
leather, had a string attached and were supposed to be worn around
the neck. The E stands for Eastern Arctic , the 9 is the
region of Nunavik ( Port Harrison) in Northern Quebec. 9952 is the
number given to Daniel Quma Angiju from the Puvirnituq Community. He
was born 05/30/1929 and died in 1979. Daniel Quma Angiju was a very
talented soapstone carver and his work is object of several art
auctions.
This soapstone statue is a very beautiful piece of
art and deserves a place in your collection.
